Hundreds and thousands or more social network contacts

I sometimes wonder, what does it mean to have hudreds or thousands (or more) contact in your contact list, expecially the private social networking ones such as Facebook, Twitter, MSN ..etc?

Does it mean you are very popular and congenial? or simply you spend too much time on gadgets adding new contacts whom you barely care or know about?
At least to me, it felt superficial.
