standing on the shoulders of giants

Posted in Proposition on December 13, 2009 by ckaiyang

From wiki:

The attribution to Bernard is due to John of Salisbury. In 1159, John wrote in his Metalogicon:

“Bernard of Chartres used to say that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size.”

Confidence and arrogance

Posted in Proposition on December 13, 2009 by ckaiyang

As Paddy said, “there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance.”
To me, it is just two sides of the same thing. Confidence is how one perceives himself, while arrogance is how others think he perceives himself.

… or maybe,
confidence is how one and others perceive himself, and arrogance is how him and others think how he percieves himself comparing to others.

such a blahblah!

Research direction

The research and its direction is very dependent on the resources that are available, and the contacts, collaborations that are made.

tolerance

It is easy to tolerate things that you don’t care.
It is however truely difficult to accept facts, view-points and acts that is difference than your believe, and happens to be important to you.

Being nice to people

“It’s easy to be nice to people you like, but being nice to people you hate, that is the skill”

time and duration

We cannot really talk about time, but we only duration. (adapted from Stevel Holl)

Question is not about whether I can be there on time, but more significant is how long it takes me to be there on time.

can’t work without trust

I was told, you don’t always have to work with people you like. Maybe. But one can never work with someone he doesn’t trust.

nothing is too small

Nothing is too small unless compared, and nothing is big if there is no standard.

Conveniences and mistakes

Posted in Proposition, Uncategorized on July 22, 2009 by ckaiyang

technology advances has made it possible to get more things done in a faster and easier way. but it also made it possible to make mistakes in a faster and easier ways.

I’ve been organizing a surprise party for a friend’s (let’s call her H2) birthday and farewell. I was using emails to notify all people to join with the detailed plans of surprise; I used group mailing list and forgot to delete H2’s email from the list.
…. and so now I blew up everything just with a few clicks … Send To Group mail list ok send …. and that’s it. Point of no return. Convenience and mistake.

Scalability

The scalability of a sensor is not only about its functioning, but also about its operation without strigent conditions, and about it working better or comparable to itself before scaling.
